When life feels out of control, it is so helpful to find practices and rhythms to ground you to what is true. Few things have shaped and formed me as a follower of Jesus quite like the practice of examen. When I have the courage to show up and create space, the Holy Spirit has used this prayer practice to form me and ground me and surprise me and calm me in so many ways.
The examen is a daily prayer exercise created by Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. It is “…A technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern his direction for us. The Examen is an ancient practice in the Church that can help us see God’s hand at work in our whole experience” (www.ignationspirituality.com)
This is what is truly so life-changing about it—the examen exercise not only connects us to the actual events of our day, but is a way to find the evidence of God that pours through our lives all over the place.
